Road To Southern Laos Tour 8 days

Taking road from Vientiane down to southern of Laos will be a memorable experience: Stopping on the way for photos of picturesque landscapes, tasting one the best coffee of the world, enjoying elephant riding, admiring magnificient waterfalls and 4000 islands...Your trip in Laos ends at Dong Kalor, from where you cross the border and start your journey in Cambodia

After breakfast in hotel, meet your guide and driver then start your journey to Khammouan province

Along the way, visit the Wat Prabath, which maintains an imprint of the Buddha's foot and characterized by its Hindu-inspired stupa. A little further on, we stop in a village specialized in the sale of dried fish. After that, you will leave the main road to enter the Phou Hin Poun NPA (National Protected Park).

Arrival and check-in your hotel in Hinboun. You can take a walk around 15-20mn to visit the local village, taking advantage of the landscape and the discovery of a simple way of life.

After breakfast in hotel, start your third day tour in Laos with sighseeing in Konglor cave.

You will be provided with lifejackets and headlamps before a short walk around the main entrance of the cave. Once inside, you will board a long boat that will sail you along this spectacular cave on an underground part of the HinBoun River - a 7.5km journey before you see the daylight again! The river is active throughout the year and reveals a large formation of stalactites and stalagmites which you can explore partly on foot inside the cave. The place of the cave extends almost 90m and reaches a height of 100m.

Then transfer to Thakhek. Stop on the way to visit That Sikhottabong (6km south of Thakhet), one of the main stupas of Laos, whose origins go back to the 6th century and which was restored in 1970. Arrival and check in you hotel.

Today, depart to Savanakhet. Upon your arrival in Savannakhet, visit the Vat Rattanalangsi temples and especially the very interesting Vat Sainyaphum, made up of several colorful temples and stupas and a beautiful garden where the bonzes devote themselves to the sculpture and painting of Boudha. Stop at the site of That Ing Heng, 2nd most sacred place of southern Laos, after the Vat Phou. This stupa, at the base cubic, is very ancient and supposed to contain a relic of Buddha. It was restored in the 16th, then in the 20th century by the French. A golden umbrella is attached to its top.

Continue driving to Pakse. Arrival and check in you hotel in Pakse.

After breakfast in hotel, transfer to visit Boloven Plateau. As soon as you leave Pakse the road climbs in elevation as you ascend onto the Plateau. The area of Volcanic Rock makes for suburb tea and coffee plantations which thrive on the rich soil and the cooler climate. Then enchant your tongue with a taste of several varieties of coffee.

Visit Tad Yuang Waterfall, Tad Fane Waterfall before carrying on to explore some typical local villages and Tad Lo Waterfalls, a beautiful formation of three separate falls. End of visit, transfer back to Pakse.

After breakfast, heading to explore the fascinating Pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phou, one of the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. This Khmer temple is at the base of a curiously shaped 1,416 meters mountain and reserves some peculiarities to be discovered, namely: engraved cliff, elephant figure carved out of the natural rock and gatekeepers Dvarapala, etc. Enjoy a magnificent view over the Mekong River from the third platform of the ruins.

We depart to Ban Kiet Ngong at the edge of the Xe Pian wetlands and National Protected Area. Here we will meet our elephants! On the back of our elephants we go to the archaeological site of Phou Asa, from where we can also enjoy the beautiful views of the 700 ha Pha Pho wetland, which is rich with bird life. After our elephant riding tour we can still play a bit with the elephants and feed them with some delicious treats.

Then continue to Don Khong, the biggest island in Si Phan Don area. Check in your hotel.

After breakfast, embark on a small boat for 2h cruise to Done Khone through the beautiful 4000 islands area.

Arrival and start your day with sightseeing in Done Khone island. This is an ideal destination to take a walk or bike ride. On this island there is an abandoned railway and Colonial French Buildings. Explore the Li Phi waterfall (also called Somphamit Waterfall), which lies between the 2 islands of Don Xang and Don Khone and thus forms a natural border between Laos and Cambodia. The main road to go there is well preserved and decorated with bamboo groves.

Then transfer to Ban Hang Khone village where you embark on a boat to the border of Laos and Cambodia. If you are lucky, you can observe freshwater Irrawaddy Dolphins, called “Pa Kha” in Lao, reach about 2,5m in length and likely number less than 20 total in Laos. Then go to your hotel on Don Khone for checking in.

After breakfast, we board a boat to Ban Nakasang and take a short drive to the Lao – Cambodia border.

En route we visit the breathtaking Khone Phapheng waterfall, the South East Asia’s biggest waterfall, known as the Niagara of the East.

The trip in Laos ends after transfer to the Lao-Cambodia border at Dong Kalor border gate.
