Xieng Khoang

During your vacation in Laos, it will be a regrettable lack if you forget to discover the province of Xieng Khouang and its surroundings.

Located in northeast Laos, about 400 km north from Vientiane, Xieng Khouang province is known as a Laotian museum about Secret War. In here, you will see enormous craters caused by the intense bombing of the American armed forces during the sixties. Despite this terrible past, Xieng Khouang still remains its own beauty and tranquility over time. Besides, the nature offers Xieng Khouang not only a pleasant climate but also magnificent landscapes such as verdant valley, grandiose mountain as well as rice fields as far as yours eyes can see.

As a mountainous region, you may have the opportunity to explore the diversity of the ethnic culture of the minority communities such as H'mong, Lao Loum, Khamu or Laotai.

As the provincial capital of Xieng Khouang, Phonsavan is full of lush hills and pine forests, which is why its name locally means 'hills of paradise'. At this place, all things are multicolored. Take a walk around the city, you could see several colored wooden houses in the local villages, or, if you are lucky, H'mong cowboys who get dressed in violet or brown color. In addition, you will be able to see the visible influence of the war in the city: the walls of hotels, restaurants and perhaps travel agencies are decorated with bombshells or other weapons used during the war.

Once you visit Xieng Khouang, there are many tourist attractions not to be missed for a small stopover during the day. One of them is the Plain of Jars, which is considered as one of the most famous and archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Besides this magnificent plain, you might find the Organic Mulberry Farm, the Tad Lang Waterfalls as well as Kha, and many other landscapes awaiting you!
